Five unusual primates rescued from Bichitrapur forest as officials investigate their mysterious arrival in Balasore
Balasore, Odisha : An extraordinary wildlife discovery in Odisha’s Balasore district has left residents and forest officials searching for answers after five young orangutans were found in a forested area of Bhograi block on Tuesday. The animals were spotted in the Bichitrapur–Badapahi area, where their sudden presence drew large crowds of curious villagers and prompted an immediate response from the Forest Department.
The unusual sighting quickly became the centre of attention as residents gathered near the forest after seeing the reddish-haired primates moving through the vegetation. Videos and photographs of the animals also began circulating, adding to the curiosity surrounding what appeared to be an extraordinary encounter in a rural part of coastal Odisha.
Forest officials subsequently launched a rescue operation and safely brought all five animals under their care. They were taken to the forest office for veterinary assessment, with officials examining their health and condition before deciding on further arrangements. Reports indicate that four of the five young animals were in good health, while veterinary teams were examining and treating them.
What makes the discovery particularly unusual is that orangutans are not native to the wild forests of India. Their natural range is in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia. Their unexpected appearance in Balasore has therefore raised an immediate and important question: How did five young orangutans reach an Odisha forest?
For the Forest Department, the rescue is only the beginning of the investigation. Officials are trying to establish the animals’ origin and determine how they came to be in the area. Authorities have not yet publicly established the circumstances behind their presence, leaving several possibilities open while the investigation continues.
The discovery has also raised concerns about the possibility of illegal wildlife trafficking. Odisha’s Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said authorities were examining the possibility of an international link in the case. However, any conclusion about trafficking or the animals’ exact journey would require evidence from the ongoing investigation.
Officials are also focusing on the animals’ immediate welfare. After veterinary examinations and the completion of necessary formalities, arrangements are reportedly being made to shift the rescued orangutans to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar.
The episode has transformed a quiet forest landscape in Balasore into the centre of a remarkable wildlife mystery.
