Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley saw an unmatched social media storm on Wednesday as people flooded digital platforms with Artificial Intelligence-generated images capturing the nostalgic appeal of 1980s Bollywood, with the trend refusing to slow down.

From the early hours of Wednesday, users across the Valley posted retro avatars complete with vintage hairstyles, bell bottom trousers, and oversized sunglasses reflecting the essence of a bygone era. The captions were almost identical, reading Retro Vibes 1980 as the trend gained unstoppable momentum.

This is not merely a filter, it is an emotion. The 80s Bollywood era was sheer magic the music, the fashion, the larger than life romance.

Today we are all reliving that dream,” said Khan Firdous, a Srinagar-based digital content creator whose AI portrait drew comparisons to veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.

He added that similar crazes had been seen before, such as the black and white filter trend or the old-money aesthetic. According to him, Kashmir adopts trends with full intensity, but this one feels more personal because Bollywood has always been an emotion in the region.

The craze crossed regional boundaries, with political figures and celebrities joining in. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Kiren Rijiju, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared their retro AI makeovers, prompting amused reactions from followers. Bollywood couple Kiara Advani and Sidharth Malhotra also participated, with fans comparing their vintage transformation to iconic pair Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon.

Social media analysts point to a recurring pattern in the Valley. Kashmir has always been a trend driven society.

From picture reels to video challenges, the moment something catches attention, the entire Valley embraces it collectively. This retro wave is a classic example of digital herd mentality, said Shiekh Saleem, a senior journalist.

What started as a niche experiment has now become a full-blown internet storm. I woke up to hundreds of requests from friends and family asking me to generate their retro images. Within hours, my timeline was nothing but 80s Bollywood. It is chaotic, but beautiful chaos, shared Touseef Wani, a graphic designer from Srinagar.

As the hashtag #RetroVibes1980 continues to dominate trending lists, social media experts predict the wave will last at least another 48 hours.

With thousands of posts pouring in every hour, the retro wave appears unstoppable, leaving many to wonderwhat will the Valley embrace next?

Notably, this trend coincides with Bollywood’s return to the Valley during the International Film Festival, which began on 7 September and will conclude on Thursday. Over the past three days, filmmakers from both Bollywood and abroad have participated.

The International Film Festival marks a significant cultural revival for the region. The event showcases a diverse range of narratives from mainstream commercial cinema to independent and documentary works. The festival has also facilitated panel discussions, masterclasses, and networking sessions, providing a platform for emerging local talent to interact with established industry veterans.
