Srinagar, J & K : The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed noisy scenes on Tuesday after National Conference (NC) MLA Abdul Majid Larmi sought restoration of the public holiday marking the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah triggering strong protests from BJP members.

Larmi said the government should either restore the holiday associated with Sheikh Abdullah or reconsider the holiday on the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.

His remarks drew immediate objections from BJP legislators, who raised slogans in support of Maharaja Hari Singh.

NC legislators Mubarak Gul and Shamima Firdous also pressed for restoration of the Sheikh Abdullah holiday during the uproar.

PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para supported the demand for restoration of the holiday and also called for the restoration of the July 13 Martyrs’ Day holiday.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather asked the protesting members to maintain order and allow the proceedings to continue, warning that disruptions would not be permitted.

Amid the continuing uproar, BJP legislators staged a walkout from the House.

The developments came a day after the Assembly’s autumn session opened amid protests by BJP members and counter-slogans from ruling alliance legislators over various political and public issues.
