Guwahati,Assam : In a powerful show of Assam’s anti-drug campaign, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally drove a road roller to destroy narcotics worth ₹472.51 crore during one of the state’s largest-ever drug disposal operations.
The seized contraband included 39.068 kg of morphine, 79.770 kg of opium, 58.877 kg of heroin, cocaine, over 19 lakh Yaba tablets, 2.29 lakh bottles of cough syrup, nearly 37.8 tonnes of cannabis (ganja), and poppy straw.
The drugs, confiscated in NDPS cases across Assam, were scientifically disposed of using a high-temperature incinerator after court approval.
Calling it a major step in the state’s war on narcotics, Sarma said Assam is taking the fight against drug trafficking “to the next level.” He revealed that over 3,300 NDPS cases have been registered in the state over the past five years.
The Chief Minister also warned that smugglers are adopting increasingly sophisticated tactics, including hiding drugs inside fake leg casts and tiny containers to evade detection.
Stressing that border fencing alone cannot stop the menace, he said intelligence-driven policing and inter-agency coordination are crucial to staying ahead of trafficking networks.
