NewDelhi : Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, July 20, during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The proposed legislation seeks to extend the same legal protection to Vande Mataram, India’s National Song, as is currently provided to the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. If passed, any act of insulting, disrupting, or obstructing the singing of Vande Mataram could attract a punishment of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
Under the existing law, disrespecting the National Anthem or preventing its rendition is a punishable offence. The amendment aims to bring Vande Mataram within the same legal framework that safeguards other national symbols, including the National Flag and the Constitution.
The move reflects the government’s effort to ensure equal legal recognition and protection for the National Song alongside the National Anthem as part of its broader emphasis on preserving national honour and cultural heritage.
