New Delhi : Indian Railways is taking a major step towards enhancing the travel experience for the common man. Air-conditioned (AC) coaches will soon be introduced in the Amrit Bharat Express. The Amrit Bharat 3.0 Express is expected to launch within this financial year.
Until now, the Amrit Bharat Express has operated as a non-AC long-distance passenger train, featuring General and Sleeper class coaches. These trains promise affordable travel combined with high speeds and modern amenities similar to the Vande Bharat. Since their inception in 2023, the fleet has grown to over 60 trains. The Sleeper class fare is set at approximately ₹500 for a distance of 1,000 kilometers to ensure affordability for the general public. Demand is so high that the average occupancy for Sleeper class exceeds 100 percent.
AC First, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier coaches will be added to the Amrit Bharat 3.0. Orders for a total of 14 rakes have already been placed. These coaches will be equipped with features similar to the Vande Bharat Sleeper and Rajdhani Express, offering passengers a premium travel experience.
Key Features of Amrit Bharat Trains
- High speed (max 130 km/h), rapid acceleration, and reduced travel time due to locomotives at both ends (push-pull technology)
- Foldable snack tables, improved seats, and berths
- Mobile holders, along with USB-A and USB-C charging ports
- Public address and passenger information systems
- Jerk-free ride facilitated by semi-automatic couplers
- Modern toilets (Indian and Western styles) featuring automatic soap dispensers and odor control systems
- Air-spring suspension, crashworthy features, and enhanced safety measures
Railway experts note that the demand for AC travel is rising rapidly. Former ICF GM Sudhanshu Mani believes that India should gradually move towards making most trains air-conditioned so that the common man’s travel experience is truly upgraded.
