Ahmedabad, Gujarat : Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed concern over the problem of rainwater flooding in areas of Ahmedabad falling under his parliamentary constituency Gandhinagar. He has written a letter to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Ahmedabad Mayor and Municipal Commissioner, urging them to find a permanent and planned solution to this.
According to a press release issued by the Union Home Ministry Office, Amit Shah has taken seriously the problem of waterlogging arising after heavy rains in the new urban areas of Ahmedabad – Bopal, Ambli, Ghuma and Shela. People are struggling with the problem of waterlogging during rains in all areas of Amit Shah’s parliamentary constituency Gandhinagar. Therefore, Amit Shah has written a letter to the Chief Minister as well as the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, asking them to take necessary steps to resolve this recurring problem.
The problem of waterlogging came to the fore after heavy rains in Ahmedabad. During the recent rains, about 18 inches of rain fell. Due to heavy rains, the Ambli-Bopal-Ghooma-Shela areas were waterlogged, causing problems for the local residents.
It is worth mentioning here that all these areas were included in the limits of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in the year 2021. Due to the geographical location and the old drainage system not being suitable, the problem of waterlogging occurs here repeatedly during heavy rains. Keeping this in mind, Amit Shah has demanded a permanent solution from the state government and the local administration.
On the instructions of Amit Shah, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation conducted a survey of the entire area and prepared a zone-wise rainwater drainage master plan. Under this plan, it has been planned to build a drainage system in areas where no such facility is available at present. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has conducted a hydrological survey of the entire area and has prepared a zone-wise storm water drainage master plan. The AMC has also said that apart from this, waterlogging areas will be identified and necessary measures will be taken there.
A new storm water drainage network will be built in areas where there is no basic infrastructure for water drainage. Interconnected drains, new pipelines and drainage channels will be arranged for quick drainage of rainwater. Keeping in mind the increasing urbanization, a plan has also been included to connect the drainage system on the banks of the Gota-Godhavi Canal and Sabarmati river.
