Srinagar, J & K : Congress legislators staged a protest in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday, raising slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and demanding his removal.

The legislators carried placards and raised slogans calling for the resignation of the CEC, with the protest coming amid the Congress’s nationwide campaign over its concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and the revision of electoral rolls.

The protest was held as the Assembly met for its scheduled business on Friday. The Congress had called upon its state units to organize protests on September 25 seeking the removal of Kumar and a review of decisions and electoral-roll changes made under his tenure.

The Election Commission has maintained that differences and observations within the Commission are part of institutional deliberations and that its decisions, including those relating to the Special Intensive Revision, have followed the prescribed legal and statutory process.

Friday’s sitting of the J&K Assembly is earmarked for Private Members’ Resolutions. Seven resolutions have been selected for consideration, covering issues including regularization of daily-rated and other similarly placed workers, a parking master plan for Jammu East, allotment of state land to homeless families, expediting the Lolab-Bandipora tunnel, formulation of a jobs policy, and restoration of water resources.
