From the Shadows to the Spotlight : Former Maoists Showcase a New Identity

Raipur, Chattisgarh : It’s Hard to Believe These Girls Once Walked the Naxal Path Today, They’re Shining on the Runway. It is hard to believe that the women confidently walking the fashion ramp in Raipur once lived a very different life in the forests of Chhattisgarh. Former women Maoists who had surrendered and chosen to return to the mainstream made a striking appearance at a special Tribal Fashion Show, walking the ramp alongside professional models and showcasing traditional handloom outfits.

The event was organised in Raipur to mark National Handloom Day, turning the runway into a powerful symbol of transformation, rehabilitation and a fresh start. Dressed in beautifully crafted handwoven attire, the women confidently took to the ramp, presenting a completely new image of themselves far removed from their former life associated with armed Maoist activity.

Their participation drew attention not only for the fashion on display but also for the larger message of change and reintegration. The event was attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Assembly Speaker Raman Singh, the state’s two Deputy Chief Ministers and several other ministers, who encouraged the former Maoists as they walked the runway.

Once living under the shadow of conflict, these women were now seen embracing a new chapter centred on dignity, livelihood and social acceptance. Their transformation was presented as an example of how rehabilitation initiatives can help surrendered cadres build a life beyond violence and reconnect with society.

The fashion show also highlighted the rich tradition of Chhattisgarh’s tribal handloom and craftsmanship, giving the participants an opportunity to promote local textiles while gaining confidence and a platform in the mainstream. From navigating the forests to walking under the spotlight, their journey from conflict to couture has emerged as a striking reminder that a second chance can open the door to a completely different future.
