Patna,Bihar : In a major political development, election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor is finally stepping into the electoral battlefield. The Jan Suraaj Party has officially named its founder as the party’s candidate for the high-profile Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, marking the first time Kishor will seek a direct public mandate.
The announcement was made by Jan Suraaj state president Manoj Bharti after a meeting of the party’s core committee. The Election Commission has scheduled polling for July 30, with nominations closing on July 13 and counting of votes on August 3.
The Bankipur seat fell vacant after BJP leader Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha. While the BJP is yet to announce its candidate, names such as Ajay Alok, Neel Ratan Ghosh, and Ajeet Kumar Lali are doing the rounds. The Janata Janshakti Dal has fielded social activist Veena Manvi.
Widely regarded as one of India’s most successful political strategists, Prashant Kishor has crafted election campaigns for several major parties over the years but has never contested an election himself. The Bankipur bypoll will therefore be his biggest political test yet, transforming him from a behind-the-scenes strategist into a frontline candidate.
The contest also comes at a crucial time for Jan Suraaj. In the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the party contested 238 of 243 seats but failed to win any, securing just over 3% of the statewide vote share. Despite the setback, Kishor has maintained that the campaign helped build a strong grassroots organisation across Bihar through his statewide Jan Suraaj Padayatra, which focused on governance, education, healthcare, employment, and accountability.
Bankipur has long been considered a BJP bastion, making this bypoll a high-stakes contest with national political significance. For the BJP, retaining the seat is crucial to reaffirm its dominance in urban Bihar. For Jan Suraaj, the election offers a chance to prove that its grassroots movement can convert public support into votes.
As Bihar gears up for the July 30 showdown, all eyes will be on whether the man who helped others win elections can now win one himself.
