Opposition, led by Congress, announces a march to the Supreme Court on Monday
New Delhi : CJI Surya Kant appeared on camera for the first time on Monday and stated that he has declined to meet the Opposition. However, he did not disclose the reason for this decision. He mentioned that a reply had been sent via letter, outlining the reasons for the inability to meet. Notably, the INDIA alliance has announced a march to the Supreme Court on Monday. Prior to this, the Congress party had stated that they had sought an appointment with the Chief Justice of India.
When asked about the reason, the CJI said, “Look, ask them what is in the letter. I have maintained the confidentiality of that letter.” He added, “The doors of the Supreme Court are open to everyone—be it an ordinary citizen or an honorable member. It is the right of every citizen of India to approach us. We will hear the matter in accordance with the law and the legal system, and grant everyone their due rights.”
Sources indicate that no order can be issued at an administrative level regarding this matter. Sources further stated that CJI Surya Kant remarked that the Supreme Court cannot interfere in the functioning of the executive at an administrative level. However, the contents of the letter have not yet been made public.
The Opposition is raising questions about the CJI following his refusal to hold the meeting. Sanjay Raut, Rajya Sabha MP from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), said, “A massive march by the INDIA alliance will head towards the Supreme Court. We had sought an appointment with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, but we have learned that the Chief Justice will not meet us.” The reason cited is that they do not have this right. The public is in distress, yet the Chief Justice is unwilling to meet with them.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had said on Sunday, “We will continue our fight. We are also scheduled to meet the Chief Justice of India tomorrow. Both Rahul Gandhi and I have written letters. We have arranged a meeting between 4 PM and 5 PM to apprise him of the situation. While we cannot make demands of him, we will respectfully place our concerns before him and request his intervention.”
He added, “The Prime Minister and the Home Minister have created an atmosphere of chaos across the country. A situation akin to an undeclared emergency prevails, and we will continue to fight against it. Yesterday, approximately 32,000 police personnel and 7,500 CRPF troops were deployed. This demonstrates just how terrified the government is of the youth movement.”
