Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority marks a major DFC milestone with the launch of its first double-stack long-haul container train, carrying 360 TEUs to Gujarat.
Mumbai : Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), the country’s premier container port, has achieved another significant milestone in rail operations along the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The first double-stack long-haul container train departed from JNPA at 7:00 PM on August 21. Carrying 360 TEUs of import containers, the train set off for CGMV at Varnama, Gujarat.
The import cargo, handled by Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited, had arrived at the port through PSA. This inaugural run of the double-stack long-haul train strengthens JNPA’s long-distance rail connectivity and provides a major boost to the rapid and efficient transportation of import-export cargo from the port.
The double-stack method enables the transport of a larger number of containers on a single train. This not only increases rail freight capacity but also facilitates the swift evacuation of containers arriving at the port and their onward transport to final destinations. This facility will be particularly beneficial in reducing the dwell time of import containers at the port. As long-haul trains allow for the bulk transport of goods over long distances, logistical bottlenecks will be minimized, ultimately making the entire supply chain more efficient and dynamic.
The long-haul double-stack DFC rake enhances the port’s capacity for rapid cargo evacuation and efficient transport to the country’s hinterland. Consequently, reduced transit times will help boost the competitiveness of India’s import-export trade. JNPA continues to invest consistently in strengthening its infrastructure and connectivity. The first long-haul double-stack DFC container train, launched as part of this initiative, will mark a significant step towards a fast, efficient, reliable, and competitive multi-modal freight transport system for India.
