Kolkata : Political tensions escalated in south Kolkata’s Kalighat neighbourhood in the early hours of Saturday, November 7, after violent clashes reportedly broke out between Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) outside the residence of TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The incident took place between approximately 2 AM and 3:30 AM, as preparations were underway to celebrate Banerjee’s 39th birthday. At least eight people sustained injuries, including three who were reportedly seriously hurt, according to police officials.
TMC Accuses BJP Supporters of Attack
TMC supporters alleged that BJP workers deliberately targeted the birthday celebration preparations, damaging banners and cutouts and raising political slogans.
The ruling party further claimed that its workers and police personnel who intervened to control the situation were assaulted during the confrontation.
Following the violence, Abhishek Banerjee staged an overnight sit-in protest outside his residence, demanding stringent action against those involved. The demonstration continued until approximately 6:30 AM.
BJP Rejects Allegations, Offers Different Version
The BJP strongly contested the TMC’s account of the incident, claiming that its supporters were travelling through the area to purchase Kali idols from local artisans ahead of religious observances.
According to BJP representatives, an argument broke out between the groups before escalating into a physical confrontation.
Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also dismissed suggestions of an organised attempt to target Abhishek Banerjee, questioning the use of public roads and footpaths for private birthday celebrations.
Police Step Up Security in Kalighat
Kolkata Police brought the situation under control by Saturday morning. Several individuals were reportedly detained for questioning as investigators began examining the circumstances that led to the violence.
Additional police personnel were deployed around Banerjee’s residence and the surrounding neighbourhood to prevent further confrontations.
The incident has once again brought the political rivalry between the TMC and BJP in West Bengal into sharp focus, with both sides trading accusations over the overnight violence.
