LEH : Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on Saturday visited the Union Territory’s high altitude Lilium flower field in Leh and reviewed the growth of the flowers and preparations for dispatching the first commercial consignment to national markets.
The LG described the initiative as a significant step in putting Ladakh’s floriculture sector on the national map, highlighting the excellent growth of Lilium flowers cultivated without the use of pesticides or fertilisers.
The flower field also relies entirely on solar energy for its watering requirements, showcasing the adoption of sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in high altitude agriculture.
Gupta said the project is being driven by local women, who are actively involved in plucking, sorting and packaging the flowers.
He said the initiative is creating meaningful employment opportunities while contributing to the financial empowerment of women in Ladakh.
The first commercial consignment is expected to connect Ladakh’s locally cultivated flowers with markets across the country, opening new avenues for floriculture and livelihood generation in the Union Territory.
The LG said the initiative reflects Ladakh’s potential to develop innovative, sustainable agricultural enterprises suited to its unique high altitude environment.
