New Delhi : The United Kingdom has entered a new political chapter as Andy Burnham officially assumed office as Prime Minister, succeeding Keir Starmer, who stepped down after leading the Labour government. Following Starmer’s resignation, King Charles III formally invited the 56-year-old Labour leader to Buckingham Palace to form a new government, completing the constitutional transfer of power.
Burnham, who was elected unopposed as the new leader of the Labour Party last week, is expected to move quickly to appoint his Cabinet and outline his government’s agenda. In his first remarks as Prime Minister, he pledged to provide “stable and responsible” leadership, promising to focus on restoring public confidence and addressing the country’s key economic and social challenges.
The leadership transition marks another significant moment in British politics, with Burnham becoming the fifth Prime Minister in just four years, reflecting a period of rapid political change in the UK.
Before leaving 10 Downing Street, Keir Starmer delivered an emotional farewell speech, declaring, “My job is done.” He thanked the British people for their trust and expressed full confidence in Burnham, saying he was handing over the nation’s leadership with complete support and pride in his government’s achievements.
Starmer, who led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election and served as Prime Minister for two years, received a warm standing ovation from Cabinet colleagues, advisers and Downing Street staff as he departed the Prime Minister’s residence.
With Andy Burnham now at the helm, attention will turn to the composition of his Cabinet and the policies his new government will pursue as Britain enters a fresh phase under Labour leadership.
