HC Says Citizens Can’t Blame BMC Alone for Monsoon Flooding
Mumbai : The Bombay High Court on Tuesday observed that Mumbai’s recurring monsoon waterlogging cannot be blamed solely on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The court remarked that encroachments and clogged drainage systems have significantly contributed to the city’s flooding woes, calling the situation “our own creation.”
The observation came during the hearing of a petition involving a dispute over a ‘loop road’ in Mandale village. According to the BMC, the land in question does not belong to the civic body but falls under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), where the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Colony is situated.
Taking note of the matter, the High Court issued a notice to the Department of Atomic Energy, seeking its response.
The remarks have reignited discussions on urban planning, illegal encroachments, drainage maintenance, and shared responsibility in tackling Mumbai’s annual monsoon flooding.
