Cyclone Threat Looms Over Odisha ? Bay System Intensifies, Heavy Rain Alert
Bhubaneswar, Odisha : The sky over Odisha is turning ominous as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens, raising concerns of intense rainfall and rough conditions along the coast! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a strengthening system over the Bay, with a deep depression expected to move towards the South Odisha–North Andhra Pradesh coast. Current forecasts indicate extremely heavy rainfall over parts of South Odisha on September 23 and 24, along with thunderstorms and strong winds.
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and reach the coast around September 23, with the possibility of crossing between the Ganjam and Puri areas during the night of September 23 or the morning of September 24, according to reports citing the IMD forecast. Coastal and southern districts are therefore being advised to remain alert as rainfall activity is expected to intensify.
The weather system has already prompted authorities to step up preparedness, while fishermen and people living in vulnerable coastal areas are being urged to exercise caution.
In Astaranga, local fisheries officials have also been conducting awareness activities among fishing communities in coastal villages, urging fishermen to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories. With the system expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds, residents in low-lying and coastal areas are being advised to closely monitor official updates.
The latest IMD warnings indicate that very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is possible in Odisha over the coming days, making the next 48–72 hours particularly important for coastal and southern districts.
