Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen has emerged victorious as the Vice-President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in the 2026 elections, drawing attention for both his campaign and his electoral margin.

According to reports, Shokeen campaigned barefoot for around three to four months after the Satyam Niketan hostel incident, saying he had taken the step as a symbolic commitment to seek justice for the students affected by the incident.

He reportedly won the Vice-President post by a margin of more than 20,000 votes, while his victory has also been described as a significant milestone for an independent candidate in DUSU politics. Shokeen had initially sought a ticket from the Congress-affiliated student organisation NSUI and had filed his nomination as an NSUI candidate, but was later asked to withdraw it.

Instead of stepping aside, he continued the contest as an independent candidate and eventually secured victory. A resident of Delhi’s Peeragarhi area, Shokeen is a graduate of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.

Reports say his father works as a bus conductor and his mother is an anganwadi worker. Student politics reportedly interested him from an early stage, although his father wanted him to prepare for the UPSC examinations and pursue a career as an IAS or IPS officer.

Speaking after the results, Shokeen said he had expected strong support from students because he had consistently raised issues concerning their problems and rights. His campaign, including his decision to remain barefoot, became one of the distinctive features of the election, while his victory as an independent candidate has added another notable chapter to the 2026 DUSU election.
