Paradip, Odisha : In a significant development for Odisha’s maritime and industrial sector, Paradip Port has been granted ‘Mega Port’ status by the Central Government under the newly implemented Indian Ports Act, 2025, marking a major milestone in the state’s growing maritime ambitions and strengthening the port’s position on India’s strategic trade map. The recognition places Paradip among the country’s major and strategically significant ports and is expected to further expand its role as a key gateway for cargo movement, industrial activity and logistics across eastern and central India.

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, through a notification issued on Friday, declared four ports as Mega Ports Paradip Port, Deendayal Port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mundra Port. Paradip Port is one of the most important maritime gateways on India’s eastern coast and handles substantial quantities of essential bulk commodities such as coal, iron ore, fertilisers, crude oil and other cargo, supporting a wide range of industries and supply chains.

Its strategic location along the Bay of Bengal gives it an important role in connecting Odisha and neighbouring states with domestic as well as international markets. Officials said the Mega Port recognition reflects Paradip’s expanding cargo-handling capabilities, modern infrastructure, strategic location and growing importance in the country’s logistics ecosystem.

The new status is expected to create further opportunities for investment, infrastructure development, technological upgrades, operational efficiency and expansion of cargo-handling facilities, while potentially strengthening the port’s ability to support the increasing trade and industrial requirements of the region. The recognition could also provide fresh momentum to the development of surrounding logistics networks, improve connectivity and encourage greater participation from industries dependent on efficient maritime transportation.

Paradip Port Authority Chairman Sushant Kumar Purohit described the Mega Port status as a significant milestone, stating that the recognition would help strengthen the port’s infrastructure, enhance operational capabilities and contribute to the continued growth of maritime trade. The development comes at a time when Odisha is placing increasing emphasis on port-led industrialisation, logistics infrastructure and the efficient movement of goods, with Paradip playing a central role in that strategy.

With its established cargo-handling infrastructure, expanding capacity and strategic location, Paradip Port is expected to remain an important contributor to Odisha’s economic activity while strengthening its role in India’s wider maritime and logistics network. The Mega Port recognition therefore marks not just a new designation for Paradip, but an important step in the port’s continuing expansion and Odisha’s broader vision of becoming a major maritime, logistics and industrial hub on India’s eastern coast.
