New Delhi : The Supreme Court has declined to issue immediate directives against a protest being organized by the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) at Central Park in Connaught Place. The Court expressed hope that the protesters would act with prudence and ensure that the public is not inconvenienced. Meanwhile, traders have raised concerns regarding potential losses to their businesses during the festive season.
The CJP has announced plans to gather at Central Park, Connaught Place, this evening for a ‘Lahra Do Tiranga’ (Hoist the Tricolour) march. The Delhi Police has denied permission for this march and has urged the public to stay away. However, the police indicated that they might facilitate a small, limited group to hoist the national flag and sing the national anthem at an appropriate location. Separately, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has announced that Central Park will remain closed to the general public on Friday and Saturday, citing administrative reasons. This decision follows the Delhi High Court’s refusal to restrain the CJP from holding the protest. The demonstration was announced after CJP leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were arrested upon reaching Jantar Mantar and subsequently remanded to five days of judicial custody by a Special Executive Magistrate.
The police stated that Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) is currently in force in the area to maintain peace and ensure the safety of the public, as well as both public and private property; this provision prohibits the assembly of people.
