Tata Sons Board Backs Chandrasekaran’s Fresh 5-Year Term
A major leadership twist has emerged at Tata Sons! In a significant decision on September 17, 2026, the board of Tata Sons approved the reappointment of N. Chandrasekaran as Chairman for another five-year term, reversing the earlier development in which he had indicated that he would not seek another term after his current tenure ends in February 2027. The decision reportedly came amid intense discussions over the future leadership and regulatory direction of the Tata Group. Chandrasekaran has headed Tata Sons since 2017 and was previously given a second five-year term in 2022.
However, the latest board decision has faced opposition from Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, who voted against the reappointment, according to reports. The development comes shortly after the Reserve Bank of India rejected Tata Sons’ request to surrender its registration as a Core Investment Company, keeping the company under the regulatory framework applicable to an upper-layer NBFC and putting renewed focus on its potential public listing.
The Tata Sons board has also moved toward complying with the RBI’s listing requirements, making the company’s long-discussed entry into the stock market a major issue for the group. With Chandrasekaran now set to continue at the helm, the Tata Group faces an important period involving leadership continuity, regulatory compliance, governance discussions and the future structure of Tata Sons.
The reappointment and listing-related decisions could still require further shareholder and regulatory processes, while the reported differences within Tata Trusts add another layer to the unfolding corporate developments.
