Septic Tank Collapse Raises Fresh Questions Over Worker Safety in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : A tragic accident claimed the lives of two construction workers in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, after an under-construction septic tank collapsed in the BJB Nagar area on Saturday.

According to preliminary reports, the workers were carrying out construction-related work when the septic tank structure suddenly gave way. Both workers fell into the collapsed tank, triggering panic at the construction site.

Local residents and emergency responders rushed to the spot and rescued the workers before they were shifted to Capital Hospital for treatment. However, after medical examination, doctors declared both workers dead.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collapse. It remains unclear whether the incident was caused by structural failure, negligence, or violations of construction safety norms.T

The accident also brings back memories of another fatal incident in Kalahandi district earlier this year. On May 26, 2026, six people lost their lives due to suspected asphyxiation while removing centring from an under-construction septic tank at Gaud Karlakhunta village under M. Rampur block. The victims included three masons, one labourer, the house owner, and his son, while another worker sustained critical injuries and was hospitalised.

The back-to-back tragedies have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of construction safety regulations and improved protection for workers employed at hazardous construction sites.
