New Delhi : The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a fresh circular reiterating the official protocol for the performance of India’s National Song and National Anthem, directing all States, Union Territories, and Central Government departments to ensure strict compliance at public and official events.
According to the advisory, whenever “Vande Mataram” and “Jana Gana Mana” are performed together, the National Song must invariably precede the National Anthem. The Ministry has clarified that this sequence applies irrespective of whether the rendition is through a choir, band, mass singing, or any other approved format.
The circular further extends the protocol to occasions where a State Song is also included, making it clear that the prescribed order remains:National Song (“Vande Mataram”) → National Anthem (“Jana Gana Mana”)To ensure uniformity across the country, the MHA has directed institutions and authorities to use only the officially approved lyrics, text, and pronunciation.
The Ministry has also made available the authorised versions and audio guides through its official portal.The guidelines encourage community singing in schools, educational institutions, and public gatherings, particularly during flag-hoisting ceremonies, national celebrations, and cultural programmes. Citizens attending such performances are expected to stand at attention and maintain appropriate decorum as a mark of respect.
The advisory also outlines detailed instructions regarding band performances, ceremonial procedures, the use of full and shortened versions of the National Anthem, and other aspects of official protocol.
With national events and public functions taking place across the country throughout the year, the Ministry has instructed authorities to immediately disseminate the updated directions among all institutions under their jurisdiction.
The renewed emphasis serves as a reminder of the importance attached to India’s national symbols and the traditions associated with them — ensuring that every rendition reflects both constitutional propriety and collective respect for the nation.
