For many Ramnamis, the name is tattooed across different parts of the body—including the arms, legs, chest and, in some cases, even the face.The Ramnamis believe that when the name of Ram is written permanently on the body, it remains with a person throughout life. For the Ramnami community, the belief is simple yet profound: if the name of Lord Ram is permanently written on their body, it will remain with them throughout their lives. Their devotion is not limited to body markings. Many Ramnamis also wear clothes and shawls bearing the name of Ram, while some traditionally wear distinctive peacock-feather crowns.

A Tradition Dating Back to the 19th Century

The practice of inscribing Ram’s name on the body is believed to have emerged among the community in the late 19th century. Several oral traditions and stories are associated with its origin. According to one popular account, the practice developed following experiences of discrimination related to temple entry. Another tradition suggests that the practice was adopted as a way of reaffirming devotion and religious identity within the community. Over generations, the tradition became an inseparable part of Ramnami identity.

A Faith Passed Down Through Generations

Even today, the tradition continues from one generation to another. From children to elderly members, many Ramnamis carry the name of Lord Ram permanently on their bodies. The community is primarily associated with Chhattisgarh and neighbouring regions, with people following the tradition also found in parts of Odisha, Maharashtra and other areas.
