It may sound like something from a fantasy world, but an extraordinary natural phenomenon has turned a pond in Hawaii into a striking shade of pink, leaving locals and visitors amazed.

Located in Maui’s Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, the water body has undergone a dramatic colour change, with its surface appearing almost like a giant pool of pink dye. Because of its unusual Barbie-like appearance, the pond has been popularly described as “Barbie Pond.” But beneath the beautiful colour lies a serious environmental change.

What turned the water pink?

According to scientists, the unusual colour is linked to extremely high salinity caused by drought conditions. As water levels dropped, the concentration of salt in the pond increased significantly, creating an environment suitable for specialised microorganisms that can produce reddish or pink pigments. Researchers initially considered whether algae might be responsible for the unusual colour. However, scientific examination pointed towards salt-loving microorganisms known as halobacteria, which thrive in extremely salty environments. The pond’s salinity has reportedly risen to around twice that of seawater, creating conditions very different from those normally found there.

Beautiful, but don’t touch the water

Despite its spectacular appearance, authorities have warned people not to enter, touch or drink the water. The bright pink colour may look harmless and even inviting, but the extreme salinity and unusual microbial conditions mean the water should be treated with caution. The transformation has also drawn attention to the impact of changing environmental conditions. Drought in Maui, combined with the effects of previous severe wildfires, has contributed to significant changes in the local ecosystem.

A rare sight after decades

The phenomenon is particularly remarkable because such a dramatic transformation has reportedly not been observed locally for many decades. What was once a normal-looking water body has suddenly become one of the region’s most unusual natural sights, attracting widespread attention because of its extraordinary colour.
Scientists are continuing to monitor the pond and its changing conditions. If substantial rainfall returns and the water becomes less salty, the striking pink colour could gradually disappear.

For now, however, Hawaii’s “Barbie Pond” remains a fascinating reminder of how dramatically nature can change under extreme environmental conditions.
