Nepal’s Flood Nightmare : 5 Disasters That Turned the Himalayas Into a Death Trap

New Delhi : A calm river can suddenly become a wall of destruction. Across Nepal, intense rainfall, landslides and glacial lake outbursts have repeatedly triggered catastrophic floods, leaving communities with little time to escape and causing devastating loss of life and property.

The destruction keeps returning. Year after year, Nepal has faced powerful floods that have claimed lives, washed away homes and destroyed vital infrastructure. These disasters reveal the terrifying power of the Himalayan landscape and the growing danger faced by vulnerable communities.

Sudden flash floods are not a new phenomenon in Nepal. Due to the country’s mountainous geography, devastating floods can occur when heavy rainfall, landslides or sudden outbursts from glacial lakes cause rivers to rise rapidly.

Nepal’s rivers originate in the Himalayas and often flow through narrow valleys close to densely populated areas. During intense rainfall, water levels can rise suddenly. Landslides can also temporarily block river channels, creating dangerous water reservoirs that may burst and send powerful torrents downstream.

At times, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) can also trigger massive waves of water, sweeping away homes, roads and bridges in their path.

Here are five major flood disasters Nepal has witnessed in recent years:

2025: Bhote Koshi River Flood

On July 8, 2025, a devastating flood struck the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa district. A sudden surge of water from a glacial lake in the Tikret area caused extensive destruction.
11 people were killed, while another 11 were reported missing.

2024: Deadly September Floods

Heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding across Nepal on September 27–28, 2024.
As many as 21 districts were affected, with 250 people losing their lives, more than 180 injured and 18 reported missing.

2023: Floods and Landslides in Koshi Province

In June 2023, heavy rainfall and landslides caused widespread destruction across Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar and Ilam.
According to Nepal’s disaster management authorities, 30 people died, 30 were injured and more than 25 remained missing.

2022: Karnali River Basin Disaster

Flooding and landslides struck the Karnali River basin in western Nepal in October 2022.
The disaster claimed 36 lives and displaced more than 80,000 people. Roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and suspension bridges were also badly damaged.

2021: Melamchi River Flood
In June 2021, a devastating flood hit the Melamchi River in Sindhupalchok district.
The powerful current carried huge amounts of sand, soil and mud downstream for nearly 70 kilometres, damaging around 300 houses and 20 bridges.
