New Delhi : A hitch appears to have arisen regarding Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s autobiography, Belonging: A Journey of Love. Earlier reports indicated that the autobiography was scheduled for publication on November 10, with Penguin initially set to publish it. However, an update has emerged stating that Penguin India is not the publisher of Sonia Gandhi’s Belonging: A Journey of Love. Penguin Random House India has explicitly stated that it is not the publisher of Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming autobiography, Belonging: A Journey of Love, in India.
Media reports claim that Penguin had asked Sonia Gandhi to make certain changes to the book, but she, as the author, refused to do so. Consequently, Penguin declined to publish the book.
Addressing the controversy surrounding Sonia’s book, Penguin India stated that it decided not to publish Belonging because the author refused to accept editorial changes. “As a publisher, it is both our right and responsibility to fact-check and offer advice to authors that benefits their book. This is a standard part of the publishing process,” the company said.
Penguin India further added, “Throughout the discussions, Penguin Random House India maintained the stance that we were ready and willing to publish the book.”
Penguin also clarified in its statement that it would not comment further on confidential conversations held with the author. It is worth noting that a report had claimed Penguin asked Sonia Gandhi to make changes to the book, a claim she denied. Political speculation regarding this matter had just begun when Penguin India issued a statement to clarify the situation.
