Kargil, J & K : In a challenging high-altitude rescue operation near the Nun-Kun mountain range in the Kargil region of Ladakh, Indian Army Aviation pilots successfully evacuated a casualty from an extremely difficult slope at an altitude of around 18,600 feet.

The rescue mission was carried out using Cheetah helicopters under highly demanding conditions, with strong winds and the absence of a suitable landing area posing major challenges for the aviation crew.

According to the Indian Army, the location was situated on a steep and hazardous slope where there was virtually no space for a conventional helicopter landing. The difficult terrain, coupled with high-altitude conditions and strong winds, required exceptional flying skills and precise coordination.

To make the evacuation possible, the helicopter was lightened by removing non-essential equipment and carrying only a limited quantity of fuel. This helped reduce the aircraft’s weight and enabled the pilots to operate in the challenging high-altitude environment.

The Army aviators then carried out the rescue with remarkable precision and determination. During the operation, one of the helicopter’s skids was placed on the slope in a critical manoeuvre, allowing the casualty to be safely evacuated despite the absence of a conventional landing zone.

The operation was conducted during the last available landing window of the day, adding further urgency and complexity to the mission. The pilots had to carefully assess the terrain, weather and aircraft limitations while ensuring the safety of the casualty and the crew.

The Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps described the mission as a demonstration of the exceptional professionalism and commitment of Indian Army Aviation.

“The mission, undertaken at the last available landing window of the day, stands as a testament to the skill, courage and compassion of Indian Army Aviation,” the Fire and Fury Corps said.

The successful evacuation highlights the capabilities of Army Aviation in conducting life-saving operations in some of the most remote and inhospitable areas of the region. The mission also underscores the courage and dedication of Army pilots who routinely operate in high-altitude terrain and challenging weather conditions to provide critical assistance when every minute matters.
