Opposition targets Omar government over governance, jobs and power tariffs; NC demands statehood restoration and constitutional guarantees

Srinagar, J & K : A high stakes political confrontation is brewing in the heart of Kashmir as the ruling National Conference (NC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepare for dueling protests in Srinagar on Wednesday setting the stage for a dramatic showdown over governance and constitutional promises.

The saffron party has announced a protest march to the Civil Secretariat, while the National Conference has swiftly organized a counter demonstration outside the BJP headquarters in Srinagar as well as Jammu.

The BJP’s protest procession is scheduled to commence at the historic Clock Tower in Lal Chowk Wednesday morning, with party leaders and workers expected to converge before marching along M.A. Road toward the Civil Secretariat.

Leading the charge will be BJP’s J&K president and Rajya Sabha MP Sat Sharma, alongside Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, supported by workers and senior party functionaries.

The protest follows a recent organizational meeting in Srinagar where BJP leadership leveled sharp criticism against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s administration, accusing it of reneging on electoral commitments.

The party has spotlighted several pressing concerns, including
Soaring electricity tariffs burdening consumers,Allegations of widespread corruption, Soaring unemployment rates,Controversial outsourcing of government positions,Delayed Panchayat and urban local body elections
Opposition Leader Sunil Sharma has been particularly vocal decrying what he termed “misgovernance and corruption” while asserting that the outsourcing of recruitment processes has severely diminished employment prospects for the region’s youth.

The BJP has also raised questions about the prolonged delay in conducting grassroots elections.

Responding to the BJP’s protest call, the National Conference announced its own peaceful counter demonstration at BJP headquarters in both Srinagar and Jammu, shifting the narrative toward what it considers more fundamental issues.

In Srinagar, NC workers have been directed to assemble at Gindun Park before proceeding with their protest program. The party’s demonstration aims to hold the Union Government accountable for commitments made in Parliament and before the Supreme Court of India.

“The National Conference will peacefully gherao the BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu tomorrow, demanding accountability for the promises made by the Union Government in Parliament and before the Supreme Court of India,” the NC declared in a post on X.

The party outlined its core demands with clarity: Constitutional guarantees, restoration of statehood, clearance of the reservation file, and justice for the people of J&K.

The mandate of the people of Jammu & Kashmir is not a blank cheque. It must be respected, not taken for granted.

The timing of these protests is particularly significant, coming ahead of the forthcoming Assembly session.The BJP has already indicated that its legislators plan to raise critical issues concerning development, employment, local democracy, electricity tariffs, and overall governance within the legislative chamber.

As both parties mobilize their cadres, all eyes will be on Srinagar to see how this political face off unfolds, potentially setting the tone for the crucial legislative session ahead.
