Family’s Only Son Dies in Missile Strike; Wedding Plans End in Grief

New Delhi : What was meant to be the happiest year of his life has ended in unimaginable tragedy. Just three months after getting engaged and only weeks before he was set to marry, 26-year-old merchant navy sailor Akhil Joyan from Kerala lost his life in a Russian missile strike on a cargo vessel off the coast of Odessa, Ukraine. His family, who had been preparing for his wedding, is now mourning the heartbreaking loss of their only son.

Akhil was among the four Indian crew members killed when the cargo ship MV Golden Leo came under missile attack shortly after departing Odessa Port. The vessel, reportedly sailing under the Guinea-Bissau flag, was carrying cargo when it was struck during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Wedding Preparations Turn Into Funeral Arrangements according to family members, Akhil had returned home around three months ago to celebrate his engagement. His wedding was scheduled to take place in two months, with the bride hailing from Alappuzha district in Kerala. After the engagement ceremony, he resumed duty at sea, hoping to return home for the wedding. Instead, the devastating missile attack claimed his life before he could fulfill that dream.

Akhil was the only child of his parents. His father, Joyan, works at an electrical shop, while his mother, Sally, is an insurance agent. The family depended heavily on Akhil, who had been working in the Merchant Navy for the past six years and was planning to switch to a better-paying job to secure a brighter future.

The family had recently built a new house, hoping to begin a new chapter after Akhil’s marriage. Those dreams have now been shattered. The tragic news reached the grieving family through an official email from the shipping company, leaving relatives and neighbours in shock.

A Dedicated Sailor and Popular Sportsman.Akhil joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 19 and was known in his hometown as a disciplined, hardworking and humble young man. Apart from his professional career, he was also a well-known tug-of-war player, admired by friends and locals alike for his sporting spirit. Ward member Shoby Joseph of Balal Gram Panchayat recalled that Akhil had visited home only recently for his engagement and was eagerly looking forward to his wedding before returning to work.

Following the tragedy, the Kerala Chief Minister’s Office directed the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Russian Embassy to gather more details about the incident and extend necessary assistance to the bereaved family.

Deadly Attack at SeaAccording to media reports and Ukrainian port authorities, the cargo ship was attacked shortly after leaving Odessa Port. The missile strike reportedly killed 10 crew members, including five Syrian sailors and four Indians, while eight others were rescued safely. The incident once again highlights the devastating impact of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, where civilians and international seafarers continue to become unintended victims of the conflict.

For Akhil’s family, however, the war has brought an irreplaceable loss. A young man who was preparing to wear a wedding turban in just a few weeks will now return home wrapped in the silence of grief, leaving behind broken dreams and a family forever changed.
