‘Gandhi Thali’ to Become a Key Attraction for Visitors

Ahmedabad, Gujarat : The immensely popular ‘Jail Bhajiya House’ run by inmates of Sabarmati Central Jail and located at Ahmedabad’s RTO Circle has undergone a major transformation. Situated on the route to the Gandhi Ashram Memorial Project, this historic food outlet has been given a picturesque ‘heritage look’ through the construction of a new three-story building at a cost exceeding ₹2.5 crore.

The entire project is nearing completion under the guidance of the State’s Jail DGP, Dr. K.L.N. Rao. The primary objective of this initiative is to foster the skills of the inmates and cultivate a positive societal attitude towards their reformation and rehabilitation.

Ahmedabad’s famous ‘Jail Bhajiya House’ has now been given a fresh and appealing ‘heritage look.’ This state-of-the-art, three-story building will feature a remarkable blend of a restaurant, a banquet hall, and a special museum. A unique ‘Jailer and Inmate’ theme has been created within the new structure, promising visitors a completely novel experience.

A major attraction for visitors here will be the nutritious ‘Gandhi Thali,’ prepared personally by the inmates of Sabarmati Jail. Additionally, a special museum has been set up on the building’s second floor, offering a glorious glimpse into the historic time freedom fighters spent in Sabarmati Jail and their sacrifices.

This state-of-the-art, three-story ‘Jail Bhajiya House’ features a sales counter on the ground floor for traditional, delicious bhajiyas (fritters) and other snacks, alongside well-organized seating arrangements where visitors can enjoy piping-hot bhajiyas. A dining area has been set up on the first floor, where the special, wholesome ‘Gandhi Thali’ prepared by the jail inmates will be served; this is expected to be a key attraction for visitors.

A museum showcasing the historic time freedom fighters spent in Sabarmati Jail has been created on the second floor. An engaging museum and photo gallery have been developed to bring to life the memories and experiences of great freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Mahadevbhai Desai, Zaverchand Meghani, and Lokmanya Tilak who were imprisoned in Sabarmati Central Jail during the freedom movement.

A unique ‘jailer and prisoner’ theme has been created for customers in the newly constructed building, allowing visitors to enjoy a distinctive experience that combines dining with a taste of history amidst a prison-like atmosphere. It is worth noting that ‘Jail Bhajiya House,’ which has become an integral part of Ahmedabad’s food culture, has also achieved a significant turnover.
