Kolkata: A shocking crime in West Bengal’s Baruipur has intensified after the preliminary autopsy of a 12-year-old girl pointed to findings consistent with sexual assault, multiple injuries and drowning. The case has sparked widespread outrage, prompting police to launch an intensive investigation under a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The girl was found dead in a pond near her home in South 24 Parganas on Sunday, hours after she had reportedly left home on Saturday afternoon to buy food and never returned. Her family had filed a missing person complaint before her body was discovered.
According to investigators, the preliminary postmortem revealed injuries to the victim’s body, including injuries to her private parts, along with scratch marks, bite marks and a serious head injury. Officials believe the head trauma may have been caused by a heavy object or impact against a hard surface.
The autopsy also found water in the lungs and stomach, indicating that the child was alive when she entered the water. Authorities said the exact cause of death will be determined after forensic analysis and the final postmortem report.
Police have arrested several suspects and are examining forensic evidence, CCTV footage and witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the role of every individual involved. Investigators say the probe has reached a crucial stage, with digital evidence expected to play a significant role.
The brutal incident has triggered protests across Baruipur, with residents demanding swift justice. To maintain law and order, authorities have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in parts of the area and deployed additional police personnel.
As the investigation continues, officials have appealed to the public to refrain from speculation, assuring that every piece of forensic, digital and eyewitness evidence is being thoroughly examined to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
