New Delhi: After days of scorching heat, Delhi-NCR woke up to heavy rainfall, dark monsoon clouds and powerful winds on Thursday as the Southwest Monsoon finally swept across the national capital, bringing much-needed relief.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red nowcast alert for several parts of Delhi, warning of moderate thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds reaching 60–80 kmph, with gusts that could touch 100 kmph over the next few hours.
The warning covers Central, East, New Delhi, North, North East, North West, Shahdara, South, South East, South West and West Delhi districts. Residents have been advised to stay alert as heavy rain and thunderstorm activity may continue through the morning.
The monsoon showers have brought a sharp dip in temperatures, with the IMD forecasting a 5–7°C fall in maximum temperatures and a 3–5°C drop in minimum temperatures over the next two days.
For Thursday, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to remain between 32°C and 34°C, while the minimum is likely to hover between 22°C and 24°C, making for a much cooler day after an intense spell of heat.
