The next time you are stuck in traffic, take a closer look at the number plates around you and you will notice that they are not all the same. In India, the colour and format of a vehicle’s registration plate help identify its category and permitted use, making it easier for authorities to distinguish private, commercial, electric, temporary and diplomatic vehicles on the road.

The most commonly seen is the white number plate with black letters and numbers, which is generally issued to private vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and scooters used for personal purposes. A yellow number plate with black lettering, on the other hand, is generally associated with commercial or transport vehicles, including taxis, cabs, autorickshaws, buses and certain goods vehicles operating under applicable commercial regulations.

Then comes the increasingly familiar green number plate, which identifies electric vehicles (EVs); private electric vehicles generally carry white lettering on a green background, while electric transport vehicles also use the green background under the applicable registration format.

A red number plate is generally associated with a temporary registration, issued in specified circumstances before a vehicle receives its permanent registration, and it remains valid only for the prescribed period. Another less commonly seen category is the blue number plate, which is used for vehicles associated with foreign diplomatic missions and consular representatives, carrying special identification markings rather than an ordinary registration format.

These different colours are not merely decorative they serve as a quick visual classification system that helps traffic authorities identify the broad category and use of a vehicle at a glance. So, whether you see a white, yellow, green, red or blue plate on Indian roads, each colour carries a specific meaning under the country’s vehicle-registration framework.
