A Special Tribute to a 1,000-Year Historic Journey

New Delhi : The Government of India has taken a special initiative to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the historic Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat’s Mehsana district. The Union Ministry of Finance has announced the issuance of a special commemorative coin worth ₹100, dedicated to the temple’s 1,000-year historic legacy. A gazette notification regarding this has also been issued by the Ministry.

The coin’s design will feature India’s national emblem alongside an image of the historic Modhera Sun Temple. This commemorative coin will not merely represent a monetary value of ₹100; it will also highlight Gujarat’s historical heritage and India’s ancient architectural traditions on a national scale.

Located in the Mehsana district, the Modhera Sun Temple stands as a significant symbol of India’s ancient architecture and cultural heritage. Dedicated to the Sun God, the temple is renowned for its magnificent structure, intricate stone carvings, and artistic architecture. The completion of 1,000 years since the temple’s construction is being viewed as a historic milestone.

The announcement by the Government of India to issue a special commemorative coin for this occasion will grant the heritage of Modhera further national recognition. Commemorative coins differ from regular circulation coins and are typically issued to mark significant historical events, monuments, or occasions of national importance. This coin dedicated to the Modhera Sun Temple aims to preserve the memory of its millennia-old cultural and architectural heritage.

The Ministry of Finance has issued a gazette notification regarding the issuance of a commemorative coin to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Modhera Sun Temple. The notification outlines the coin’s design and the details to be inscribed upon it. Classified as a commemorative coin rather than one for general circulation, its primary objective is to honor the historical legacy of the Modhera Sun Temple.

By featuring the national emblem on one side and the historical heritage of Gujarat on the other, the coin’s design will simultaneously showcase national identity and regional heritage. This special coin associated with the Modhera Sun Temple will also serve as a memorable tribute to the historic monument’s 1,000-year journey.

The obverse side of this special ₹100 commemorative coin will feature the Lion Capital of Ashoka—India’s national emblem. The motto ‘Satyameva Jayate’ will be inscribed beneath it. The inclusion of the national emblem and this national motto is integral to the official identity of the commemorative coin. Other prescribed details, including the coin’s denomination, will also be engraved on it. Thus, one side of the coin will represent India’s national identity, while the other side will feature the historical heritage of the Modhera Sun Temple. In this way, both sides of the coin will showcase a unique blend of the nation’s identity and Gujarat’s historical heritage.

An image of the Modhera Sun Temple will be engraved on the reverse side of the commemorative coin. This design will directly depict the historical monument whose 1,000th anniversary is being celebrated through the issuance of this coin. The inscription ‘1000 YEARS OF MODHERA SUN TEMPLE, GUJARAT’ will appear in English on the reverse side. This text will clearly represent the 1,000-year historical journey of the Modhera Sun Temple. By featuring both the image of the temple and its 1,000-year legacy on a single coin, this commemorative piece will establish a direct link to Modhera’s historical identity. In the future, this coin may also serve as a significant memento of Modhera’s heritage.

The Modhera Sun Temple is renowned for its magnificent architectural design, the Surya Kund (sun pond), the Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), and the structure of the main temple. The carvings on the temple’s walls and pillars showcase the richness of the craftsmanship and architectural traditions of that era. Various symbolic elements associated with sun worship are also evident in the temple’s design. Now, the ₹100 commemorative coin, set to be released on the occasion of its 1,000th anniversary, will bring this heritage to the public in a new way. Featuring India’s national emblem on one side and an image of the Modhera Sun Temple on the other, this coin will highlight both national identity and Gujarat’s regional historical heritage.
