From a modest mud house in a small village of Tripura to the grand stage of the Commonwealth Games, Asmita Dey’s journey is not just a story of sporting success—it is a story of a father’s sacrifice, struggle and unwavering belief in his daughter. After winning the Commonwealth gold medal, Asmita dedicated the achievement to her late father, saying, “My Papa cannot see this, but this Commonwealth Games gold medal is for him.”
Her father passed away around seven months ago after suffering a brain stroke. He worked as a cycle mechanic and earned barely ₹300 a day. Despite the financial struggles, he worked tirelessly to support his family and raise them in their humble home. But while money was limited, his dreams for his daughter were never small.
He stood firmly beside Asmita throughout her sporting journey. When she suffered a knee injury, he took her to Delhi for treatment, doing everything within his means to ensure that her dream did not come to an end. Today, Asmita stands proudly with a Commonwealth gold medal but the person she wanted most to see her victory is no longer there.
For her, the medal is far more than a symbol of sporting excellence. It represents the love, sacrifice and countless struggles of a father who believed in his daughter even when circumstances were against them.
