Chandigarh, Punjab : Congress general secretary and newly appointed Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot is set to make his first visit to the state with the party leadership seeking to bring its factions together and strengthen the organisation ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Pilot’s appointment comes at a time when the Punjab Congress is attempting to overcome differences among its senior leaders and improve coordination within the state unit. His immediate task is expected to be to engage with various sections of the party and work towards greater unity at both the leadership and grassroots levels.

During his maiden visit, Pilot is likely to hold meetings with senior Congress leaders, legislators and office bearers and take feedback on the party’s organisational preparedness. The leadership is also expected to discuss the political situation in the state and the Congress’ strategy for taking on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.

The Congress has been witnessing differences among leaders over organisational and political issues, with rival camps often taking contrasting positions.

The party high command’s decision to appoint Pilot is being viewed as an attempt to provide a fresh organisational push and improve coordination among the competing groups.

Pilot has also indicated that the Congress would enter the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections without projecting a chief ministerial face in advance. The party is expected to rely on collective leadership and focus on strengthening its organisation before deciding its electoral strategy.

His Punjab visit also assumes significance amid efforts by the state leadership to close ranks. Senior leaders who had differences with Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring have recently shown signs of reconciliation, signalling an attempt to put internal differences behind them.

The Congress is simultaneously stepping up its attack on the AAP government on issues concerning farmers and other sections of society. Pilot is also scheduled to participate in the party’s protest in Punjab on Monday over the death of farmer Gulzar Singh.

With the next Assembly elections still months away, the Congress leadership is expected to use the intervening period to rebuild its organisational network, improve coordination among leaders and strengthen its presence at the grassroots.

For Pilot the Punjab assignment presents a significant organisational challenge as the party seeks to turn internal reconciliation into a more cohesive electoral campaign ahead of the 2027 polls.
