Imagine a place where people arrive not for a holiday or a comfortable stay, but with a deeply personal spiritual wish to spend their final days in the sacred city of Kashi! Hidden in the busy lanes of Varanasi is a unique establishment known as Kashi Labh Mukti Bhawan, popularly called the ‘Death Hotel’. Unlike an ordinary hotel, this place offers shelter to people who are believed to be nearing the end of their lives and wish to spend their final days in Varanasi, seeking spiritual peace and liberation, or Moksha.

Established in 1958 by the Dalmia family, Mukti Bhawan reportedly has just 12 rooms, and its register is said to contain more than 15,000 names of people who have stayed there over the decades.
According to Hindu religious beliefs, attaining one’s final liberation in Kashi is considered spiritually significant, and this belief draws people and their families to the holy city. The establishment follows a distinctive admission policy, generally accepting people whose health has seriously declined and whose families believe that their final days may be near.

A stay is normally limited to 15 days, and if a person’s condition does not reach the expected stage within that period, the family is requested to make alternative arrangements. The purpose of this rule is to ensure that the limited rooms remain available for others in similar circumstances. Inside the building, the atmosphere is centred around prayer, devotion and spiritual comfort. Priests are available to recite prayers and devotional hymns, while the sacred traditions of Kashi offer emotional and spiritual support to residents and their families.

Family members can stay alongside their loved ones, prepare meals and spend precious time together during this difficult phase. The facility is known for keeping its charges minimal, reportedly seeking only a small contribution towards electricity expenses, with assistance available for those unable to pay. People from different religious backgrounds can also seek accommodation, while final rites are conducted according to their respective religious customs.

But what makes Mukti Bhawan truly unusual is not the idea of death itself, but the powerful human emotions surrounding it faith, family, acceptance and the desire to spend one’s final days in a place considered sacred. It is not a place where death is arranged or caused; rather, it is a place where people facing the end of life seek companionship, prayer and spiritual peace.

In the heart of Varanasi, this unique institution reflects how deeply faith and the hope for liberation are connected in the lives of many people.
