‘Serving Grandma Is Serving Mahadev’: Family’s Emotional 300-Km Kanwar Yatra Goes Viral

New Delhi: The holy month of Sawan is witnessing countless expressions of faith and devotion across the country, but one extraordinary Kanwar Yatra from Saharanpur has captured the attention of devotees and passers-by for a deeply emotional reason. Instead of carrying only the traditional Kanwar filled with sacred Ganga water, a Shiva-devotee family from Punjab has carried their over-100-year-old grandmother, Sunahari Devi, on their shoulders as part of their pilgrimage, turning the journey into a powerful symbol of devotion, family love and respect for elders.

The family first took their elderly grandmother to Haridwar, where she was given a holy bath in the Ganga, fulfilling her long-held wish to visit the sacred pilgrimage destination. Since Sunahari Devi is unable to undertake such a long journey on foot because of her advanced age and health, her family members decided that they would carry her themselves and treat her as their unique ‘Kanwar’ throughout the pilgrimage.

After completing the sacred visit to Haridwar, the family began their return journey, covering nearly 300 kilometres on foot. Family members have been taking turns carrying their grandmother on their shoulders as they continue the arduous pilgrimage.

The remarkable sight has attracted large crowds along the route, with devotees and passers-by stopping to witness the unusual journey and many recording photographs and videos on their mobile phones.

The pilgrimage reportedly includes several members of the extended family, including seven grandsons, six great-grandsons, five granddaughters, three great-granddaughters and other relatives, all coming together to support Sunahari Devi during the journey.

Speaking about the emotional decision, her grandson Yoginder Kumar said that their family undertakes the Kanwar Yatra every year, but this time they wanted to express their gratitude to Lord Shiva by taking their elderly grandmother to Haridwar and giving her the opportunity to take a holy dip in the Ganga. According to the family, Sunahari Devi is more than 100 years old and cannot walk such a long distance herself, so they collectively decided to carry her and complete the pilgrimage together.

The family’s devotion has turned the journey into more than just a religious pilgrimage,it has become a moving example of family unity, selfless service and respect for elders. While thousands of Kanwariyas traditionally walk long distances carrying holy water for Lord Shiva, this family has chosen a different path, carrying the person they deeply respect and love.

Their journey has also sparked an emotional message among those who have witnessed it: that caring for elderly parents and grandparents can itself be considered a form of devotion and service to God.

The sight of Sunahari Devi being carried by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren has touched many hearts, reminding people that faith is not always expressed through rituals alone it can also be reflected through love, sacrifice and responsibility towards family.

For the family, every step of the nearly 300-kilometre journey appears to be an offering of gratitude to Mahadev and a tribute to the woman who has been a pillar of their family for generations.

As the unique Kanwar Yatra continues to draw attention, the message behind it remains simple yet powerful: when devotion comes from the heart, serving one’s elders can become a sacred act in itself.
