New Delhi : The opposition’s agitation regarding the Election Commission’s functioning and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls will spill onto the streets of Delhi on Tuesday. MPs from the INDIA bloc will march from the Parliament House to the Election Commission’s office.
Several prominent opposition leaders and MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will participate in the march. On Tuesday morning, the MPs will gather at the Makar Dwar of the Parliament House at 10:30 AM and commence the march at 11:00 AM.
During a meeting held on September 30, the INDIA bloc decided that all opposition MPs would march to the Election Commission on October 6. Accordingly, the MPs will set out together from the Parliament House complex towards the Election Commission’s office. Opposition parties state that this march is being organized to convey their concerns regarding the electoral process and the voter list to the Election Commission.
However, there has been a change regarding the participation of all INDIA bloc parties. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) clarified on Monday that it would not join the INDIA bloc’s march on October 6; the party is conducting its own agitation on this issue. AAP and the DMK had also not participated in the September 30 INDIA bloc meeting.
Despite this, MPs from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, RJD, Left parties, and other opposition groups are preparing to join the march. The march is taking place at a time when the opposition is consistently raising questions regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the SIR process. The Commission, however, has dismissed the opposition’s allegations of irregularities in the SIR procedure.
