Tiny Body, Giant Tentacles ! Rare Deep-Sea Creature Leaves Scientists Amazed

SPECIAL STORY : What looked like a creature straight out of an alien movie was captured moving through the darkness of the deep Pacific Ocean nearly 10,000 feet (about 3,000 metres) below the surface. The mysterious animal, with a relatively small body and extraordinarily long, thread-like arms and tentacles, initially appeared almost otherworldly on camera, but scientists later identified it as a rare bigfin squid.

The remarkable footage was recorded on August 7 by scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and collaborators during deep-sea exploration off the California coast. According to the research team, the sighting represents the first confirmed live observation of a bigfin squid in the northeastern Pacific Ocean, making the encounter particularly significant for deep-sea researchers.

The creature’s most striking feature was not its body but its extraordinarily elongated appendages, which can extend many times the length of its body and were seen bending at almost 90-degree angles in the footage. Researchers referred to this unusual posture as the “elbow pose.” Bigfin squid belong to a poorly understood group of deep-sea cephalopods and are rarely encountered because they inhabit extreme depths where sunlight barely penetrates and conditions are difficult for humans to explore.

Rather than actively chasing prey, researchers believe the squid may keep its long tentacles extended through the water, creating a kind of living “web” that can intercept small marine animals that come into contact with them. This strategy could allow the squid to conserve energy while waiting for potential prey to encounter its tentacles.

The rarity of the species makes every confirmed observation valuable: MBARI has noted that only around 70 observations or collected specimens have been documented worldwide. Researchers have previously encountered bigfin squid in other deep-ocean locations, including waters near Hawaii, while additional individuals have also been observed during deep-sea expeditions in the Atlantic Ocean.

The latest footage offers scientists another rare glimpse into the strange world existing thousands of feet beneath the waves a realm where unusual body shapes, extreme adaptations and mysterious creatures continue to challenge our understanding of life on Earth. While the creature may look like an alien at first glance, scientists have identified it as a real deep-sea squid, once again highlighting how extraordinary and still largely unexplored our own oceans can be.
