Cyclone ‘Arnab’ Coming ? New System Enters Andaman Sea, Odisha on Alert

Bhubaneswar, Odisha : A fresh weather system is brewing over the Andaman Sea, putting Odisha and the north Andhra coast on weather watch as a cyclonic circulation moves westward from Thailand. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the circulation emerged over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining areas on September 18 and is likely to develop into a Low Pressure Area around the evening of September 19.

The system is then expected to gradually intensify and move west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts over the following 3–4 days. However, there is an important caveat: there is no official confirmation yet that the system will become a cyclonic storm, and the name “Arnab” should not be treated as confirmed at this stage.

Recent reports citing the IMD have also stressed that no cyclone over Odisha has been forecast yet, with the system still being closely monitored as it develops. Meanwhile, Odisha is bracing for another spell of unsettled weather, with the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre issuing warnings for thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall, while very heavy rainfall is indicated in parts of the state later in the week.

Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar are among the areas facing the possibility of heavy rain, while several other districts may experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. As the low-pressure area takes shape, weather experts will closely monitor its intensity, direction and potential impact on the Odisha coast and the picture is expected to become clearer once the system actually forms.

For now, the key message is watch and wait, a low-pressure system is developing, but a cyclone is not confirmed yet.
