Neil, a Southern Elephant Seal, weighs around 1,000 kilograms and has surprised locals by casually moving along roads and resting near roadside areas. Photos and videos of the massive seal have gone viral on social media, attracting large crowds eager to catch a glimpse of the unusual visitor.
Wildlife officials have urged people to maintain distance from Neil and avoid disturbing him. According to experts, the seal is currently resting and should be allowed to recover peacefully.While marine animals occasionally come ashore in Australia, the appearance of a huge elephant seal in an urban area is considered a rare event.
Experts believe Neil has come to the area as part of a natural process called moulting, during which seals shed their old skin and fur and develop a fresh layer.During this period, elephant seals often remain in one location for several days while resting. Neil’s visit to the town area is believed to be linked to this natural behaviour.
Southern elephant seals are among the largest seal species in the world. Adult males can grow up to 5–6 metres in length and weigh between 3,000 and 4,000 kilograms. They are found across the Southern Ocean, Antarctica region, Australia, New Zealand and nearby islands.
These powerful marine mammals are also known for their deep-diving ability and can dive more than 1,000 metres below the ocean surface.For residents of Tasmania, the sight of a one-tonne seal casually exploring the streets has turned into a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter.
