‘Congress Made It Impure’ : CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Father on Ganga Jal Purification

Agra : A religious “purification” ceremony was held at the ancestral residence of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Agra’s Vijaynagar Colony following a protest by Congress workers and opposition leaders. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Mathur Vaishya Mahasabha organised a Kalash Yatra from a Radha-Krishna temple, with women carrying ceremonial pots and participants chanting prayers while conch shells and bells were sounded. After reaching the residence, Gyanesh Kumar’s mother Satyavati sprinkled Ganga water around the house, following which Sunderkand was recited outside the residence.

Speaking about the ceremony, Kumar’s parents said the ritual was organised after protesters had gathered outside the house on September 28 and, according to them, had “made the place impure.” His father, Subodh Kumar Gupta, said the programme was intended to restore cleanliness, peace and a “pure environment,” while also stating that its purpose was to distinguish “truth from falsehood.” The ceremony comes amid an ongoing political confrontation over demands for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

Opposition parties had recently held a major protest in Delhi, with leaders from 19 parties participating in a “Save Democracy” march from Parliament towards the Election Commission office.

Police stopped the march, after which leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged a sit-in. Following several hours of protest, police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other leaders as the demonstration was cleared.
