Advisory issued amid growing trend of using AI to alter facial features and appearance for a look reminiscent of the 1980s

Haryana : The Hisar police have issued an advisory urging citizens to use artificial intelligence responsibly while creating and sharing photographs in light of the ongoing retro look trend on social media.

The advisory comes amid a rising trend of using AI tools to alter facial features and appearance, giving photographs a nostalgic look reminiscent of the 1980s.

While such creations are often meant for entertainment, police warned that altering and sharing someone else’s photographs, videos or voice without their consent especially in a misleading objectionable or defamatory manner could result in legal consequences.

Superintendent of Police Siddhant Jain appealed to the public to ensure that AI-generated content does not compromise anyone’s identity, reputation or privacy. He cautioned against portraying individuals in an objectionable or misleading way and against circulating such content on social media.

The police advised users to obtain consent from the person concerned before uploading or forwarding any AI-generated photos, videos or audio, and to ensure that such content does not damage a person’s reputation or violate their privacy.

According to police, any attempt to defame, threaten or cheat someone create a fake identity or produce and circulate objectionable content using AI could attract legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, 2000 and other applicable laws depending on the case.

Such action may include the registration of an FIR and the imposition of fines.

The advisory further urged citizens who fall victim to cybercrime to preserve digital evidence and report the matter to the police without delay.
