Sonam Wangchuk describes India’s current situation as an undeclared emergency

New Delhi : Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a stern warning regarding the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) protest in the capital, Delhi. On Saturday evening, he stated that if the detained leaders are not released by Sunday, he might launch a hunger strike or a foot march. Expressing concern, he described the current situation in India as an undeclared emergency. Wangchuk mentioned that while he had appealed for unity and peace prior to the protest, he had not anticipated that the leaders associated with the movement would be arrested.

Sonam Wangchuk expressed hope that the detained leaders would be released soon. He stated that if they are not released by Sunday, he would have to consider taking steps such as a hunger strike or a padyatra (foot march). Wangchuk’s statement comes amidst police action regarding the CJP protest against the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi.

Earlier, on Friday, Sonam Wangchuk had stated that he would be unable to participate in the protest scheduled at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. He explained the reason in a social media post. Wangchuk said that despite the government’s attempts to obstruct and undermine his work, he continues to work for national security. Ahead of the winter season, his team is preparing to address issues related to water security and the threat of floods caused by glacial lakes in the Himalayan regions. Sonam Wangchuk stated that his preparations involve creating artificial glaciers and experimenting with ways to mitigate the threat of floods from glacial lakes. He highlighted the presence of over 200 such lakes in the Himalayas, describing them as threats akin to “water bombs.” Quoting lines from the poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Wangchuk remarked that there are sorrows in the world beyond politics, and forms of relief other than the joy of reunion. He explained that this is why he is unable to come to Delhi, though he is sending his best wishes to everyone participating in the protest.

Sonam Wangchuk appealed to leaders of various groups to remain united and act wisely. He also urged Gen-Z youth to maintain complete peace under all circumstances. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi, he noted that he had brought this very message of Gandhi to Jantar Mantar back in June. Wangchuk expressed hope that the protesters would not let Gandhi’s message of non-violence be undermined.
