Good News for Jagannath Devotees! Mahaprasad Token Counters Coming Outside Srimandir Gates

Puri,Odisha : A new system could soon make it easier for devotees to get Mahaprasad at Puri Srimandir without entering the temple’s crowded barricaded areas. The administration is planning to open a Mahaprasad token counter outside either the North or South Gate of Srimandir by Kartika month, according to information shared by Padmanabha Mahasuar, president of the Suar Mahasuar Nijog.

Under the proposed system, devotees would pay the prescribed amount at the counter and receive a token according to the number of people they want Mahaprasad for. They could then collect the Abadha Mahaprasad from the designated servitors near the gate. The proposed arrangement is expected to particularly benefit local residents of Puri, who currently have to enter the barricaded area like other visitors to collect Mahaprasad.

A token-based system along with a publicly displayed price list could also help devotees know the prescribed rates and reduce the scope for alleged overcharging by middlemen. The plan has reportedly received administrative support, and the issue has generated discussion after the Suar Mahasuar Nijog raised several demands before the government.

According to Padmanabha Mahasuar, the Nijog had placed nine demands before the government, primarily focused on ensuring a smooth supply of Mahaprasad to devotees. One of the major concerns is the availability of firewood for the Srimandir kitchen, where Mahaprasad is traditionally prepared. The Nijog said the temple currently requires around 100–120 quintals of firewood every day, while the requirement may rise to approximately 180–200 quintals during Kartika month and major festive occasions.

The servitors have reportedly warned that if adequate firewood is not supplied on time and the temple has to purchase it at higher prices from elsewhere, the cost of Mahaprasad could increase. They have therefore sought a permanent solution to the fuel requirement of the temple kitchen.

The temple administration has reportedly assured that efforts will be made to address the concerns raised by the Suar Mahasuar Nijog. The Chief Administrator, Dr. Padi, also said the administration would work towards resolving the issues. The Nijog has further been advised to display official price lists at Mahaprasad and dry Mahaprasad counters, so devotees can clearly see the applicable rates.

Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised over the long-term availability of firewood. Despite decisions to create new forests on government and Srimandir land, the report claims that 16 Sri Jagannath Bana projects have become inactive over the past 25 years, while no saplings were reportedly planted under the initiative during the last five years.

The Nijog has warned that if the firewood issue remains unresolved, Mahaprasad prices could rise during the upcoming Kartika month. At the same time, a formal Mahaprasad price list may also be introduced from Kartika. If the prices of essential ingredients remain stable, the existing Mahaprasad rates are expected to remain unchanged.
The proposed token system is therefore being seen as an effort to make Mahaprasad collection more transparent, convenient and accessible, particularly for devotees and residents of Puri.
