Munnar Turns Blue : Rare Neelakurinji Flowers Bloom After 12 Years

Munnar, Kerala : The hills of Munnar are witnessing a rare natural spectacle as the Neelakurinji (Kurinji) flowers, known for their distinctive blue-violet blooms and 12-year flowering cycle, have begun blooming across parts of the region.

The flowers have been spotted in areas including Korandikkadu near Mattupetty and the Chokramudi hills, drawing tourists and nature enthusiasts eager to witness the once-in-a-generation phenomenon.

The Chokramudi hills have attracted a significant number of visitors during the blooming season. The sight of the hills covered with clusters of Neelakurinji has added to Munnar’s appeal as a major destination for nature lovers.

However, continuous rainfall has affected the bloom in some areas, with reports of flowers withering and decaying due to the wet conditions.

Neelakurinji is particularly notable for its unusual flowering cycle. The plants bloom after an interval of around 12 years, making each flowering season a rare event for visitors and local communities. Following the current bloom, the next major flowering is expected around 2038.

Tourists visiting the flowering areas have been advised to follow Forest Department guidelines, remain on designated paths and avoid plucking or trampling the flowers and surrounding vegetation. Responsible tourism is essential to protect the fragile ecosystem and preserve the spectacle for future visitors.

The latest bloom has once again turned parts of the Munnar hills into a striking natural landscape, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness one of Kerala’s most distinctive floral phenomena.
