New Delhi : Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India over the circulation of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), deepfake content, and certain operational lapses across Meta’s platforms.
According to government sources quoted by CNBC TV18, Zuckerberg acknowledged the shortcomings and assured that Meta would take corrective action to address the issues. The company also admitted that payments had been made to amplify certain categories of content, describing it as a mistake and promising stricter internal oversight.
Sources further said the government informed Meta that it does not fall under the definition of an intermediary as interpreted under the Information Technology Act, making it ineligible for safe-harbour protection under the law.
The apology comes amid increased scrutiny of digital platforms over the spread of harmful, manipulated, and illegal content. Meta has reportedly assured the government that it will strengthen its content moderation systems, enhance compliance measures, and introduce safeguards to prevent similar lapses in the future.
The development highlights India’s growing emphasis on holding technology platforms accountable, with a particular focus on child safety, platform responsibility, and curbing online misinformation.
