AI Cyberattack Shock : Machine Takes Over Hacking and Demands Ransom
New Delhi : The future of cyber warfare may no longer be just humans versus humans but humans defending against intelligent machines. A new and alarming chapter in the world of cybercrime has emerged as security researchers report a case where an AI agent carried out major parts of a cyberattack and demanded ransom, reducing the traditional role of human hackers.
For years, cyberattacks were controlled by criminals who manually broke into systems, stole sensitive data, and demanded money from victims. However, this reported incident has raised fears that artificial intelligence could soon become a powerful tool for automated cybercrime.
According to cybersecurity researchers, the AI agent involved in the incident has been identified as âZedPuffer.â Experts claim this could be one of the first known cases where an AI system independently handled several technical steps of a ransomware-style attack.
The incident has created concern in the cybersecurity community because AI-powered attacks could become faster, more advanced, and harder to stop in the future. Ransomware is a dangerous type of malware that locks or encrypts files and data on a system, preventing users from accessing them.
Attackers then demand payment in exchange for restoring access. If victims refuse to pay, criminals often threaten to permanently delete the data or leak sensitive information online. Previously, hackers were responsible for every stage of such attacks. But in this case, researchers say the AI system was able to perform many complex tasks on its own.
A study by cloud security company Sysdig reportedly found that the AI agent exploited security weaknesses to gain access to servers. It then searched for API keys and passwords, moved across connected systems, and eventually encrypted data. One of the most concerning findings was that the AI reportedly corrected its own mistakes during the operation. When it faced obstacles, it adjusted its approach and continued the attack within seconds â reducing the need for constant human involvement.
Although early reports suggested a completely autonomous AI attack, researchers later clarified that a human was still involved in selecting the target, preparing the infrastructure, and providing initial access. However, after gaining entry, the AI agent reportedly handled many of the technical steps that would normally require a skilled hacker.
Experts Warn of Future Cyber Threats Cyber security specialists warn that AI-powered hacking tools could make advanced cybercrime accessible to less-skilled criminals. If such technology continues to improve, major organizations including banks, hospitals, government departments, and large companies could face increased risks.
While no major cases of AI-driven attacks targeting ordinary usersâ phones or laptops have been confirmed, experts say the threat landscape is changing rapidly. The rise of AI-powered cyberattacks highlights the urgent need for stronger digital security systems and better protection against automated threats.
As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, experts believe cybersecurity defenses must evolve quickly to prevent machines from becoming tools for large-scale cybercrime.
